•  MATHEMATICS @ Key Stage 3

Mathematics is a core subject within the National Curriculum framework and consequently it must be studied by all pupils in Years 7 to 11.

It should be noted that pupils are generally grouped according to ability. Some groups may not study all the items shown below and the depth of study may vary from one group to another.

The school follows the National Numeracy Strategy and part of each lesson will be devoted to learning and practising mental mathematic skills.

# Year 7 Mathematics

Generally, pupils will be working between National Curriculum levels 3 to 5.

The following Units are studied in Year 7:-

Unit 1: Data Handling: collecting, recording, presenting, interpreting & analysing data

Unit 2: Place Value: estimating, x & ÷ by 10, 100, 1000

Unit 3: Fraction & Percentages:

Unit 4: Measures 1: Units of measure, accuracy in measuring, converting between measures, problems involving length, area & perimeter

Unit 5: Calculating 1: Types of Numbers, Methods for Calculating

Unit 6: Sequences 1:

Unit 7: Shape 1:

Unit 8: Probability:

Unit 9: Algebra 1: simple formulae and expressions, solving simple linear equations

# Year 8 Mathematics

Generally, pupils will be working between National Curriculum levels 4 to 6.

The following Units are studied in Year 8:-

Unit 1: Algebra 2: expressions, formulae and equations

Unit 2: Position & Movement: Reflection, Rotation, Translation & Enlargement

Unit 3: Data Handling 2: conducting surveys, grouping data

Unit 4: Fractions, Decimals & Percentages including Ratio & Proportion

Unit 5: Algebra 3: Functions, Graphs & Sequences

Unit 6: Shape 2:  Measures, Area, Perimeter & Volume & Solving Problems

Unit 7: Probability:

Unit 8: Place Value 2  Place Value & Calculations. Calculator Methods

Unit 9: Angles 2: angle properties of polygons and angles associated with parallel lines

Application of Number: Level 1

# Year 9 Mathematics

Generally, pupils will be working between National Curriculum levels 4 to 7.

The following Units are studied in Year 9:-

Unit 1: Algebra: Sequences, Functions & Graphs. Solving Problems

Unit 2: Number 1: Fractions, Decimals, Percentages, Ratio & Proportion

Unit 3: Shape: Geometrical Reasoning, Lines, Angles & Shapes, Construction & Loci. Solving Problems

Unit 4: Data Handling: Interpreting, Creating & Comparing graphs & charts

Unit 5: Algebra 2: Equations, Formulae & Identities

Unit 6: Number 2: Calculator Methods & Solving Problems.

Unit 7: Shape 2: Coordinates, Measures & Mensuration

Unit 8: Data Handling 2:  Probability, Fractions

Unit 9: Algebra 3:  Integers, Powers & Roots. Sequences, Functions & Graphs. Solving Problems

Unit 10: Shape3: Geometrical Reasoning, Lines, Angles & Shapes, Transformations, Mensuration, Ratio & Proportion

ASSESSMENT in KS3

At the start of each Unit pupils will be given an Assessment Sheet describing the objectives of that Unit. During the work, pupils may be asked to assess how well they understood an objective by ticking the appropriate column L K J on the sheet. At the end of the Unit, they will assess their understanding of the whole Unit (2 Stars - 2 things they have done well and 1 Wish - 1 area to target for improvement). The teacher will also assess their work from evidence of class work, homework and tests.

Pupils will be expected to submit regular homework tasks.  These homework tasks could involve one or two short tasks of 30 minutes duration per week, or occasionally one longer task lasting one or even two weeks.  Normally, a short homework task should be submitted for marking in the lesson following the one in which it was set. Homework is to be completed in the Homework book. If mistakes are made in their homework pupils are expected to do corrections also in their Homework book.

There will be a short test on completion of each Unit so pupils can judge how well they have understood the work. Questions are based on typical SATs type questions. After every half term there will be a longer test. This will encourage pupils to learn their work regularly and also help staff to monitor the progress of individual pupils.
